Assam records single-day highest of 77 COVID-19 deaths; highest single-day spike of 5,803 new cases

GUWAHATI: Assam today recorded single-day highest of 77 COVID-19 deaths, taking the death toll in the state to 1,753.

On the other hand, Assam’s COVID-19 tally rose to 2.98 lakh as the state reported this year’s highest single-day spike of 5,803 new cases.

Of the 77 new deaths, 30 were reported from Kamrup (M), followed by Kamrup and Dibrugarh 10 each, Bongaigaon four, Golaghat, Nagaon, Nalbari and Sivasagar three each, Hojai, Tinsukia and Udalguri two each, and Darrang, Dhubri, Jorhat, Karimganj and Sonitpur districts one death each respectively

The current death rate in the state is 0.59 per cent.

On the other hand, 1,347 more COVID-19 patients have died for other reasons so far in the state.

Assam currently has 37,500 active COVID-19 cases.

During the day, 4,231 people recovered from the disease taking the total number of recoveries to 2.57 lakh. The recovery rate now stands at 86.38 per cent.

The 5,803 new positive cases included 1,481 from Kamrup (M), 486 from Kamrup, 392 from Dibrugarh and 275 from Nagaon districts. The positivity rate stood at 8.04 per cent.

Altogether 72,197 samples were tested for COVID-19 today, taking the total number of such tests to 91.49 lakh.

On the other hand, a total of 31.16 lakh people have received the COVID-19 vaccine so far in the state.

Earlier in the day, new Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that controlling the COVID-19 situation in the state will be his government's top priority.
