The leaders of the regional parties in Assam stood intact for the cause of the people
The 3rd Conclave of the North East Democratic Alliance held on 20th May 2018 saw the presence of the CM of all the NEDA allied states except Sikkim. The meeting which was chaired by the National BJP President, Amit Shah was of paramount importance as such the deliberation of strategies for 2019 elections were done and also the socio-political problems plaguing the North East was discussed.
The stand of the regional leaders of the State against one of the burning matters, i. e the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 was credible.
Atul Bora, President of Asom Gana Parishad spoke for the welfare of the people. He stated “ We have to do a lot because people’s expectations are high”. He affirmed that it is very essential to work for the cause of the people. He drew the attention of Amit Shah to the most talked about Citizenship Amendment bill, saying that the Constitutional Safeguard of the people needs to he held high. He stated that the Assam Accord is the result of bloodshed of more than 800 people and if the bill comes into being the entire Accord will be nullified breaching the Constitutional provisions. He urged the BJP President not to take the issue of the bill any further and urged him to consider the sentiments of the indigenous people of Assam
Hagrama Mohilary, the BTC chief didn't lag behind in speaking for the rights of the indigenous people by opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill. He also broached out the issue of insurgency in the North East which has created a menace in the States.
Thus the stand of the regional leaders against the Citizenship amendment bill 2016 acted as the restoration of faith of the people at least to some extent.
