Guwahati, September 8, 2019:

The state of Assam is observing the 93rd birth anniversary of 'Bharat Ratna' Bhupen Hazarika today. Born on this very day in 1926, the multi-faceted 'Bard of Brahmaputra' was an Indian playback singer, lyricist, musician, singer, poet and filmmaker, who set the bar for Assamese music and culture for many long decades.

Although Hazarika passed away in 1926, he is still remembered to this day for his immense contributions to the arts and culture. The people of Assam, and especially students, are celebrating the day by organizing functions and paying tributes to the beloved bard.

Hazarika's songs, which were based on the themes of communal amity, universal justice and empathy, have become popular among the people of Assam. However, somewhat surprisingly, they are as popular in Bangladesh and West Bengal. Hazarika is also credited with taking the culture and folk music of Assam to the world.

Many tributes also poured in via Twitter on Hazarika's birth anniversary. A tweet sent out from the official handle of All India Mahila Congress, read, "His music was never limited to confines of Assam, it promoted the concept of universal brotherhood bringing all of us together for peace."

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal wrote, "Bhupen da, an emotion that binds the greater Assamese society in a bond of brotherhood and harmony."

"The voice of the Bard of Brahmaputra, forever resonates in our hearts and in our hills, forests & river", he added.

It may be mentioned here that the bard was conferred with a posthumous 'Bharat Ratna', India's highest honor, by the President of India, Ramnath Kovind, earlier this year. The award was accepted by his son, Tez, on his behalf.
