Assam | SC Rejects Centre's Plea of NRC Re-Verification and Re-Opening of Data

Guwahati, August 13, 2019:

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the Central Government’s plea demanding re-verification and reopening of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

Moreover, the SC also rejected the government’s plea for a further extension of the deadline for the publication of the NRC final draft.

The apex court mentioned that the NRC data will be as secure as that of the Aadhar.

The SC bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice R F Nariman ordered that the list of those excluded from the final Assam NRC be published only online on August 31st, 2019.

Earlier, on August 8, the Supreme Court (SC) asserted that the publication of NRC has been finalized as per the scheduled date of August 31 and no more time for re-verification shall be alloted.

The Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said, “We will not be bothered by what others say about our orders and judgments. We will continue to oversee NRC finalized as per the scheduled date of August 31.”

The bench also mentioned that "under no circumstances should the publication of the final NRC be stretched beyond August 31.”

Directing NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela to ignore all the criticism made on the floor of Assam Vidhan Sabha over the NRC process, the bench further said, “Anything said in the assembly is beyond the purview of judicial review. It’s as simple as that.”
