KOKRAJHAR: In a major breakthrough, security forces in Assam have foiled a bid to transfer weapons to the newly-formed insurgent group National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB) in Kokrajhar district.

Yesterday around 7 pm, security personnel launched an operation after specific input regarding a huge quantity of arms and explosives that were supposed to be delivered to the newly formed NLFB group.

"An intensive joint jungle search operation was launched by 31st Bn SSB Gossaigaon with Assam Police under command of L. Nipathoi Singh, Deputy Commandant of the 31st battalion of the SSB in Gossaigoan and IPS officer Sourav Guptain the Ripu reserve forest," an official informed.

Around 6:30 am in morning today, the personnel seized a huge cache of weapons presumed to be meant for the NDFB in the Nobinagar village of Ripu reserve forest under the Kachugaon police outpost.

They recovered 87 galantine sticks, 200 non-electric detonators, 2 country-made rifles, 3 9mm pistol magazines, a Chinese grenade, electric wire, 4 12-volt batteries, 2 pressure cookers, and 2 axes.

"The seizure has inflicted a major setback to the newly formed group and the process of gathering the cadres to its team. The search operation is still continuing and teams are searching the jungle," said an official.

As the BJP is seeking votes for restoring peace in Assam, some former leaders of the erstwhile insurgent group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) have returned to the jungle and floated a group to resume the armed movement.

In a video statement released to the media, the leaders of the newly-floated “National Liberation Front of Bodoland” (NLFB) said the Centre and Assam government’s lack of interest in solving the Bodo issue compelled them to continue with the struggle and fight for rights.

Stating that the BJP is a “big threat” to Assam, the rebel group, which is headed by MD Batha, appealed to people to drive the party out of Assam.
