Special crematoriums and graveyards will be built in all districts in Assam in secluded places for the last rites of the COVID-19 related deaths.

Speaking to the media persons on May 20, 2020, the Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that the deputy commissioners have been asked to set up crematorium and graveyards. “There was already an order for such an arrangement. Some of the districts have already set up crematoriums and graveyards. Now, we have asked all the deputy commissioners to set up the crematoriums and graveyards at secluded places,” he said.

It may be mentioned that the Kamrup (Metro) district administration had faced problems to cremate the body of 71-year-old COVID-19 patient – Gopindra Chandra Malakar. He died of the infection on May 18.

As per information, Malakar's body was taken to Bhootnath cremation ground by the Kamrup (Metro) district administration officials. But, the decision was withdrawn after receiving objections from the authority of the cremation ground. Later, the body decided to cremate the body at the Ulubari Cremation Ground. Following the cremation, the Ulubari Cremation Ground committee alleged that the district administration cremated the body without giving any prior information to the committee. The committee also alleged that the cremation ground was not sanitized by the administration after the cremation.

COVID-19 scenario in Assam

The SARS-CoV-2 virus has infected a total of 191 people and claimed four deaths in the state so far. Of the 191 confirmed cases, 136 are active cases while 48 have been cured or discharged and four have died of the infection in the state so far. Three COVID-19 patients have been migrated.

The state has registered six confirmed cases today. All these six cases have been reported in Kokrajhar quarantine centre.

Assam has registered the highest confirmed COVID-19 cases in Northeast India followed by Tripura with 172. On the other hand, Sikkim, which has installed its first COVID-19 testing lab, has not registered any positive case so far. Meghalaya has 14 confirmed cases so far.
