Guwahati: Assam State Corporation has introduced 20 premier category air-conditioned Benz buses to its fleet.

The newly-inducted Benz buses will operate between LGBI Airport, Guwahati and Silchar, Dibrugarh and Jorhat respectively.

Additionally, new day services have also been started between Dhubri-Guwahati, Lakhimpur-Tezpur routes and in the hilly regions of Haflong and Diphu to Hojai.

The buses were flagged off by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal from Assam Administrative Staff College today.

Having successfully countered the threat of Covid-19 to a large extend, the Government is now focusing on improving transport facilities in the state and the procurement of the buses seems to be a step in that direction.

As per sources, another 20 bus are soon to be introduced shortly.

Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) whose revenues have seen significant improvement in the last 3 years, has purchased these busses entirely from its own funds without any government support.

Sonowal today expressed his satisfaction at the procurement of the premier fleet and promised to bring in many more such initiatives in the state.

Chandra Mohan Patowary, Transport Minister, also commented that the government is firmly committed to bring in the best services, transparency in its functioning for the welfare of the state.

He also expressed that Assam is the only state in the entire North Eastern Region to have inducted such premier category buses.

He also added that this will not only assist in employment generation in the state but also provide comfortable and luxurious bus services.

ASTC led by Shree Anand Prakash Tiwari also introduced a number of new initiatives to improve the revenue situation of the corporation such as providing vehicles to PSUs such as ONGC, OIL India etc.

He also mentioned new schemes such as uberization of buses to promote new entrepreneurs, safe and comfortable pink busses for women through Bhraman Sarathi, etc.

Notably, this is the first time that such high-end buses have been procured by the ASTC.
