Assam: Tarun Gogoi Bats for Formation of New Party to Oust BJP from Power

Guwahati, January 11, 2019:

Senior Congress leader and 3-time former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi on Saturday gave his assent for a new political power in the region to oust the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled Government in the State, amid turmoil over the burning issue of the.

Gogoi, taking to Twitter earlier today, wrote, "A political party has become a necessity now to oust BJP." Claiming that the new political front has become a necessity after the , Gogoi further added that We are not selfishly looking after our own interests because a new political party might inflict some damage on our party as well. We are trying to protect the interests of the people of Assam."

Gogoi's statement comes in the wake of the announcement of an 'alternate political power' by several eminent personalities and indigenous peoples' leaders. Cultural icons, such as the celebrated singer Zubeen Garg, have also raised the issue of the need for a new political party.

All Assam Students' Union's (AASU) firebrand leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi has opined that the calls for a new political outfit have been gaining momentum due to the 'ideological differences' with the Hindu nationalist BJP party. "“People are protesting and due to their ideological clash with the ruling dispensation, and their fears have led to the idea of floating of a new party, that will be an alternative solution to the existing options — the AGP, BJP, and Congress", said Gogoi, while talking to Inside Northeast.

Meanwhile, Gogoi feels that he is being targetted by the ruling dispensation due to his voicing out against the 'CAA'. Recently, the Congress leader's Z plus’ to ‘Z’ category. In 2016 Gogoi’s ‘Z Plus’ security with NSG protection was brought down to ‘Z plus’ with CRPF cover. Gogoi was given NSG cover in 2006.
