Thousands of people thronged the Town High School field to witness “Margherita Garjan”, a gathering called to oppose the newly amended Citizenship Act in Tinsukia district’s Margherita town in Assam.
Around 30,000 people assembled in the Garjan flaunting their Gamusas to oppose the CAA unitedly and raised their voices against the contentious law.

The Margherita Regional Students’ Union, in support of the civil and social organisations of Margherita, literary persons and artists today organised the “Margherita Garjan”. Quashing the efforts of the state’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)led government’s efforts to garner support for CAA, the people are showcasing a strong regional sentiment.
The General Secretary of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Udip Jyoti Gogoi, while addressing the gathering, said, “The BJP-led government, both at the centre and state, has betrayed us in the name of religion. They are dividing us. The BJP must know it clearly that is the land of Srimanta Sankardev and Azaan Pir Phakir.”

He further said that the Assam Accord was signed in the year 1985 and it was clearly written in that the cut-off date is March 24 1971. “But now the traitor BJP government has forcefully passed the CAA, which we, the people of Assam, shall never accept any cost,” he added.
The AASU leader has also warned the BJP government to withdraw the CAA or the situations will worsen in the days to come.

It may be mentioned here that the shops and other businesses have been shut in Margherita in protest against the CAA.
