MORIGAON: The Tiwa Autonomous Council election in Assam began on Thursday at 7:30 am amid tight security arrangements and with proper COVID-19 protocols. A total of 3,08,409 voters will decide the fate of 124 candidates in the fray.

According to Assam Election Commission, the polling will end at 4:30 in almost 410 polling booths. Polling for 36 council constituencies is being held in parts of Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, and Kamrup (Metro) districts.

BJP is contesting in 35 council seats while its ally party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has contested in one seat and Congress is contesting in all 36 seats.

The counting of votes will be held on December 19.

It needs mention here that the Government of Assam has declared December 17, 2020 as paid holiday in all factories, plantations (including tea plantations), shops & commercial establishments, industries, workshops, banking institutions etc. to enable the workers/employees to cast their votes within the jurisdiction of Tiwa Autonomous Council Area Districts on account of the election to the General Council of Tiwa Autonomous Council.
