GUWAHATI: The National Crime Records Bureau's (NCRB) Crime in India 2020 (CII) report has revealed that Assam remained on top of the list in crime rate against women for the fourth consecutive year.

In the year 2020, the crime rate against women in Assam stood at 154.3 whereas the national rate is at 56.5.

In 2017, 2018 and 2019 the rate of crime against women in Assam were 142.3, 166 and 177 respectively. In the year 2020, Assam has seen a dip in the category than the previous two years.

Assam registered a total of 26,532 cases of crime against women in the survey year and it was 27,687 and 30,025 in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

In Assam, there were 26 cases of murder with rape/gang rape, 150 victims of dowry deaths, 153 victims in abetment to suicide case, 4 victims of acid attacks, under section 313 and 314 IPC 29 cases od miscarriage, 5,915 victims of abduction out of which 2984 were abducted to compel for marriage, 100 victims of human trafficking, 402 victims of cybercrimes in the last year.

During the period, as many as 11,413 women were victims of cruelty by husbands or relatives.

Several reports already indicated a probable rise in violence against women in the last year due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
