Assam: Transporters’ strike hits Northeastbandh

21 July 2018:

The indefinite strike by All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) entered the second day on Saturday, inconveniencing hundreds of people and affecting supplies of essential commodities in the Northeast along with the rest of the country.

According to reports received from various parts of the Northeast, the movement of commercial vehicles was severely affected. Also, passengers using public transport were faced with a difficult time in the wake of the strike.

In Assam capital Guwahati, the private buses were off the roads. The Assam State Transport Corporation ran its buses but as they were crowded, the commuters were forced to hire auto-rickshaws. The auto-rickshaw drivers had a field day for the second day on Saturday as they arbitrarily hiked the fares by taking advantage of the situation.

The AIMTC launched the strike demanding reduction in central and state taxes by getting diesel under the GST so that the price of the deregulated commodity can be reduced.
