A man was arrested by the authorities for trying to extort money in the name of the United Liberation Front of Axom (Independent) in Sibsagar district of Upper Assam, reports said.

The apprehendee has been identified as Abdul Tafzal, hailing from Bismail in Chabua. On Sunday, Assam Police personnel, under the supervision of the Sibsagar SP, were able to nab the suspect, along with his scooty, from Rajmai Market in Demow.
However, a suspected ULFA cadre from Dibrugarh, Bitupan Gogoi and his accomplice, were able to evade arrest. An investigation is currently being carried out by the Demow Police to apprehend the two other suspects.

According to reports, the two ULFA cadres ran away at a breakneck pace as soon as they saw the authorities approaching. According to reports, the ULFA cadres have been extorting money from local businessmen and tea estate Directors in recent times.
On Sunday, the escaped cadres and the linkman, Tafzal, had visited the market on a TVS scooter bearing registration number AS 23 T 4430, but plain clothes policemen were lying in wait and sprang a trap. They managed to capture Tafzal during the ensuing chase, and he has been handed over to the authorities for further process.
