An Assistant Professor of the Assam University was booked for allegedly hurting religious sentiments with his derogatory Facebook post against Lord Ram on Facebook. The professor is Anindya Sen.
A case was filed against Sen on August 8th, 2020 after a complaint lodged by Rohit Chanda, who identified himself as a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam. He was booked under sections 294 (obscene acts or words in public), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts to outrage religious feelings) and 501 (printing or engraving matters are known to be defamatory) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“Insulting Hindu Gods and Goddess and hurting the religious sentiments have become a fashion in Silchar.... From criticising the government and government officials, now they have moved to defame religion. Being a professor of such a reputed institution, when they propagate such thoughts, others start following,” Rohit said.
It may be mentioned that on the day of Bhoomi Pujan for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on August 5th, 2020, Sen had posted an imaginary conversation on Facebook, which drawn controversy.
However, Sen later said that he had no intention to insult the Lord Ram. “I had no intention of insulting Sri Ram Chandra. There are various versions of Ramanaya and in many of them, it is clearly mentioned that Sri Ram Chandra had abandoned his wife at Valmiki’s Ashram. For this act, Sri Ram Chandra has been criticized by many and the same has been chronicled too. I had just shared that criticism,” he said.
