Assam University VC prohibits protest within campus

Guwahati, January 12, 2019:

Just a day after the provoking statements of Pradip Dutta Roy threatening the Khilonjiya (indigenous) Assamese students studying in Assam University in Silchar with dire consequences for protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, the Vice-Chancellor has now issued prohibitory for any protest in the university campus.

An order was issued undersigned by the registrar of Assam University, Dr Sanjib Bhattacharjee has issued prohibitory orders for any assembly/ procession/ dharna or any other gathering of people or group of people within the periphery of the University campus after prior approval.

The issued order stated that any unauthorised reporting will be treated as violation of public order and the person or persons involved in such violation will undergo stringent action.

It is to be noted that such actions of the university authority is a clear violation of the freedom of speech and expression in a democratic country.
