TAMULPUR: Unseasonal Diwali celebrations have commenced in Baksa, one of the four Assam districts that constitute the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) after news broke that local resident Promod Boro will soon be entrusted with the responsibility of the top-job in the region.

Yes, moments after Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal announced that Promod Boro would become the next CEM after his party United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) managed to bag four Seats, crackers were lit up and music was played, while people danced, feasted, and made merry.

"Yesterday, we were a bit tensed. However, now we are relieved and are feeling proud as Boro has become the Chief. This time, the female workers of the UPPL will show that women are no less. Hagrama Mohilary's plow is obsolete now, and Boro's appointment as Chief brings us immense joy," stated a UPPL supporter in Tamulpur, the district's headquarters.

Another worker said that the joy of the UPPL party knows no bounds as the party's leader has been chosen as the Chief. "Even though the results are not as per expectations, we are happy that Boro will now become Chief. It is great news for us. All of us have worked hard to ensure that Boro becomes the Chief of the BTR. We will try our best to live upto the expectations and fulfill all the pre-poll promises," he said.

Boro, a fiery student leader who rose to prominence last year during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, will become CEM after a bitterly contested election that saw the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) locked in a see-saw contest with the UPPL. The BPF won 17 of the Seats -- with especially strong showings in Kokrajhar. Thanks to the BJP's support, however, the UPPL Chief will now become the Chief of the Council that was headed by Hagrama Mohilary for 3 consecutive terms.
