Assam Villagers Build 400m Long Bamboo Bridge Across Flood-Prone Matanga River

Guwahati, August 24, 2019:

Locals of Tamulpur area of Assam in the India-Bhutan border are building a bamboo bridge over the Matanga river. It is believed that once-completed, it will be the second longest bamboo bridge in Assam.

Tamulpur locals have set up this bamboo bridge over the Matanga River as every year due to floods, people face problems in crossing the river.

The locals were fed up of waiting for the Government’s attention, so they finally decided to rebuild the bridge. Each family contributed all they could and invested on building the bridge.

A local school-going child told the media, "we are from the Kumarikata School. During rainy season, we face a lot of problem. This bridge will help us in reaching our schools on time. We are happy that they are building this bamboo bridge.."

A local resident informed that the bridge is 400m long and they have all been working day and night to build the bridge. Moreover, the local informed that the design is similar to the iconic Saraighat bridge over the Brahmaputra.

The locals have been diligently working since the past 2 months to complete the bridge which is expected to be complete within the next 15-20 days.

"We raised around Rs 4-5 lakh to build the bridge. We face a lot of problems, especially during the rainy season and our children can’t go to school because it will be flooded here. The public would have been grateful if the Government had offered some help. But it’s been so long...We had to take a step", informs another local resident.
