Golaghat, October 22, 2019:

Denizens of Assam welcomed its martyred son, Padam Bahadur Shrestha, who was killed in the line of duty by Pakistani army troopers in Jammu and Kashmir, with tears in their eyes. The corpse of the fallen brave arrived in Dimapur Airport earlier on Tuesday.

The Gorkha community of Assam, meanwhile, have organized a march from Dimapur to the martyred jawan's residence in Golaghat, as a means of paying respect to the fallen Gorkha warrior. The procession is about to reach his residence at Barpathar village shortly, and many Gorkhas have lined up to catch a glimpse of Padam Bahadur's mortal remains.

Leaders and members of the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha (BGP), Assam Gorkha Sammelan and Nepali Sahitya Sabha assembled at the martyr's house yesterday to console the grief-stricken family members.

Reacting to the jawan’s martyrdom, Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha leader Nandan Kirati Diwan said, ‘Firstly as a proud Indian, I salute the supreme sacrifice and on behalf of Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha representing 10.5 millions Gorkhas of the nation pay tribute to the great soul who laid down his life in line of duty.”

In that meeting, the Gorkhas decided to welcome the martyr with a rally and named it 'Martyrs March'.

Martyr Shrestha joined the Indian Army in October 2001. A resident of Dighalipathar Hatighuli under Barpathar PS of Golaghat, Shrestha leaves behind his wife, Thal Kumari Shrestha, a daughter who is a class eleven student — and two sons.
