Wildlife Biologist and prominent eco-conservationist of Assam Purnima Devi Barman, along with others, staged a rally in Guwahati city to raise awareness about the plight of animals and birds, especially during Diwali.

Taking to Inside Northeast, the renowned wildlife activist, who is known for her work in conserving the greater adjutant stork, stated, "this evening in Diwali, we are reminding people that we are co-existing with nature, there are lots of animals around us which need our care and protection. The endangered birds like Hargila, the other threatened flora and fauna and all our domestic animals needs our support and helping hands. Let us raise a green voice for them and our precious environment. The animals are saying: hello, we are there too!"
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has issued a prohibitory order for crackers sounding more than 125db.
The apex court in its order also stated that it prohibits bursting of firecrackers after 10:00 pm during the days of the Diwali celebration in the country, which will be enforced by the local authorities.
Speaking with Inside Northeast, Deputy Commission of Kamrup (Metro), Biswajit Pegu said that the people can burst firecrackers from 8 pm to 10 pm. “The SC has sent directions to the pollution control board to comply, and accordingly, the board has passed it on to all the DCs. The District Administration, Kamrup (Metro) issued the guidelines as per the SC orders. We have also formed task forces to ensure that the guidelines are being followed. These forces will monitor and inspect commercial stock lists and retailers of firecrackers.”
