Udalguri, September 27, 2019:

A woman has committed suicide allegedly over ‘police inaction’ on her rape complaint in Assam’s Udalguri district.

The Officer-in-charge (OC) of Mazbat Police station in Udalguri has been accused of attempting to settle the rape charge by asking the woman to withdraw her complaint for Rs. 40,000.

OC Upen Chandra Barman, reportedly, offered a sum of Rs. 40,000 to the victim and forced her to withdraw the case against the rapist, who happened to be his close acquaintance.

The woman had filed a case against the culprit, Babla Daimary, who raped her at her residence. The incident dates back to September 4 when she was returning home around 1:30 AM from a cultural function with her younger sister.

According to the family members of the victim, Daimary had been stalking her since some time. That night the accused had barged into her house and raped her. He also asked her sister to shut her mouth or else he would bash her up.

Daimary had fled the scene after the crime. Later, when the woman approached the Mazbat Police Station to file a First Information Report (FIR) against the culprit, OC Barman offered her Rs. 40,000 as compensation and asked her to refrain from filing the complaint.

It has been reported that the OC had good terms with Daimary and therefore the former had allegedly turned the victim away.

Speaking with Inside Northeast, Superintendent of Police (SP), Udalguri, Longleet Terang said, "We have caught the culprit around 3:30 AM today and suspended the Officer-in-charge after registering an 'unnatural death' case after the victim committed suicide on September 7.
