Guwahati, January 1, 2020:

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on the first day of the New Year has proclaimed that the "identity" of the Assamese people will remain intact as long as he is the Chief Minister of the State.

Addressing the press here today, Sonowal stated that the protests against the 'CAA' are a result of a misinformation campaign that is being carried out by the Congress and the 'Left'. Assuring that he has conveyed the concerns of the Assamese people to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Sonowal said, "The identity of Assam will remain intact as long as I remain CM."

Sonowal also assured that no new foreigners will be allowed entry into Assam, and the Clause 6 of 'Assam Accord' that seeks to protect language, identity, and culture, will come into force at the earliest.

Attempting to re-establish goodwill between the people and the Government amid the unrest over the Citizenship Amendment Act, the Assam Chief Minister announced that nobody can shake the identity of Assam as long as he is the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Sonowal has also urged the media for its advice on how to run the State, and added that he is not averse to criticism, and, in fact, welcomes it.

It may be mentioned that Sonowal and his cohorts have come under scathing attack from various sections of the media after the BJP party rammed the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act through the Parliament. The Assam CM came under heavy scrutiny as he remained mum on the issue, despite many Northeast Indian leaders — many of them part of the BJP-led NEDA, slammed the legislation.

Sonowal’s silence over the issue raised many eyebrows, and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), of which he was once the President, has launched vicious attacks against the leader for his stand (or lack, thereof) against the Bill-turned-Act.
