Assamese Stage 'Funeral' of Republic in Guwahati to Protest CAAfuneral

Guwahati, December 30, 2019:

Supporters of Voter’s Party International (VPI), on Monday, took out a mock funeral procession of “republic” in Guwahati to protest against the amended Citizenship Act.

They took out the mock procession from the traffic point of Guwahati Club to the Uzan Bazar Ghat, and immersed the effigy in the Brahmaputra.

The members of VPI said that the CAA has caused the death of republic. They took out the funeral procession to convey that the government has killed “republic” by enacting the CAA and it has deceived the people of Assam.

The figurative representation indicated death of republic for the people of the state. The members and other supporters termed it as a “fake” one following the passage of the citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the Rajya Sabha.

The VPI members had staged the silent protest to demand withdrawal of the CAA and that Assam would not accept the “unconstitutional” citizenship law.
