HAFLONG: Yesterday, several of the prominent civil society and student organizations in the hilly district of Dima Hasao observed a 'black day' in remembrance of two youths of the district who were martyred on that day. Why were they martyred? Let us find out.

On January 18, 2018, an RSS worker called Jagdamba Mall, reportedly gave statements regarding the inclusion of lands of 8 districts -- including Dima Hasao -- in the "Greater Nagalim" Accord.

After getting to know about it, all social and student organizations decided to call for a 12-hours Dima Hasao bandh on January 25, 2018.

The Maibang railway station was blocked by organizations. Amid tensions, Dibyojyoti Hazarika, then Deputy Commissioner of the district, and Ankur Jain, the police superintendent, ordered police firing during which two youths named Mitun Dibragede and Prabanta Hakmosa were martyred.

After tha tragic incident, all the social and student organizations of Dima Hasao decided to observed 25 January as 'Black Day.'

At yesterday's programme, Pramith Sengyung, the President of the Dimasa Students' Union (DSU) said, "We want justice, we demand the punishment of Dibyojyoti Hazarika and Ankur Jain and also the RSS worker."

He also said that the organizations are not satisfied with the enquiry done by the committee which was formed under B.P. Pyarelal.

He added that the decision of "Black Day" observation was taken on 30th January 2018 and it will be observed in every Dimasa inhabited area.

Kailen Daulagupu, President of JNH, said that they want justice and demand the punishment of the culprits "as transfer is not a punishment."

Even though a high level enquiry was done by the government, we are not satisfied with that, he said.

Uttam Langthasa, President of the All Dimasa Student Union (ADSU) said "the SP and DC are equally responsible for the incdent and they should both be punished."
