Belona in Bajali of Barpeta district in Assam has recently earned the distinction of becoming the first 'Clean and Green' village in the State of Assam. Following the principle of Swachhata and shunning single-use plastic, Belona, a small village in Barpeta district, has come to become an ideal exemplar of a clean and green village.
The locals of Belona are so environment-friendly, in fact, that the locals impose a fine of Rs. 500 on anyone who is seen using single-use plastics.

Announcing this via social media, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, "A community coming together to walk on the path of data-query-source="hashtag_click">#Swachhata, the people of Belona has shown how conscious collective effort can data-query-source="hashtag_click">#BeatPlasticPollution. Taking note of this achievement, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate the Assam administration for this remarkable achievement.
Congratulating Sonowal, PM Modi wrote, "Very good! Cleanliness powered by community initiatives is always wonderful to see. Congratulations to everyone who has worked on this Swachhata effort."

In another tweet, Sonowal informed that many more villages are adopting similar practices, making 'Clean and Green Village' a mass movement in Assam. Sonowal also informed that the Prime Minister is inspiring millions.
