Dibrugarh, July 30, 2019:

Assam's 'celebri-tea' Manohari Gold tea has been sold for a staggering Rs 50,000 per kg, breaking all records.

Today, the price of Manohari Tea Eastate gold special tea was bought at Rs. 50,000 per kg by Sourabh Tea Traders Pvt Ltd at the Guwahati Auction Centre.

Earlier, Manohari Tea Estate of Mohanbari, Dibrugarh had created history on 24 July, 2018 by selling gold tea at Rs. 39,001 per kg. But the highest rate before today was in Dony Polo for selling their tea at Rs. 40,000.

Manohari Gold specialty is not just any other Assam tea, it’s very much a celebri-tea in its own right.

By virtue of being produced in smaller volumes, the price of the tea goes up. Moreover, Manohari Gold is hand-rolled, and since the process is slow and lengthy, the yield does not go beyond 50 grams a day. In fact, the estate only produced a total of just 2 kg of the variety in a season—the second flush, which is better suited for Assam tea.

In 2014, Darjeeling’s Makaibari tea was sold for a price of USD 1,850 per kg (then, Rs1.1 lakh) to buyers in Japan, the UK and the US.

It was believed that the incident was a one-off case and was perhaps not part of a commercial sale or auction, but sold on charity.

In which case, the Manohari Gold is, indeed, the highest grossing tea at an auction in the country. The world’s most expensive, though, is China’s legendary Da Hong Pao tea that costs more than 30 times its weight in gold.
