Assam’s State Anthem 'O Mur Apunar Dekh' Translated into 'Miya' Language

Just ahead of the publication of the final draft NRC on July 31, the people of Assam are experiencing a serious threat to their identity as the 'State Anthem', 'O Mur Apunar Dekh' has been translated into the 'Miya' Bengali language by an alleged Bangladeshi national named Khairul Islam.

This action by Khairul Islam has created uproar and sensation in social media platforms and also among the people of Assam.

A picture of the 'translated' anthem has surfaced in Facebook and has gone viral. People are expressing serious concern over the incident and said it is a serious threat to the indigenous people of Assam. On the other hand, many have condemned and categorically criticized the author for disrespecting the 'State Anthem', by translating it to another language.

All of this is happening in the midst of the ruckus over the Citizenship (Amendment ) Bill and people of Assam fear to lose their identity with the government’s move to enact the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The indigenous people of Assam are concerned over losing their language and a perceived 'Bengali-fication' of Assam looms larger than ever as the 'state anthem' itself is being translated into 'Miya' language.

It is to be mentioned that disrespecting or tampering of the national or state anthem is a serious criminal offence. It also falls under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. The guilty is charged with penalty or even imprisonment depending upon the degree of offence.
