Assam's TET Teachers Rock Dispur With Massive Protest

Dispur, June 29, 2019:

Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET) teachers staged a massive protest in the Veterinary field of Khanapara in Guwahati city beseeching the Assam State administration to fulfil their demands.

There has been a murmur of dissent among the teachers which grew into a loud roar as the teachers descended by the thousands on Guwahati with a resolve to take their protest to the Government in Dispur.

Their main demand is the regularization of their jobs and the teachers have collectively condemned the Assam Government and Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharjee for not addressing their issue.

It may be mentioned that these teachers have been working on contractual basis since after passing their qualification examinations. It has been estimated that there are close to 41,000 contractual teachers working in different parts of Assam.

These protests by the contractual teachers has been continuing for a while. Earlier on June 18, close to 500 Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) qualified teachers from Kamrup metro and rural districts gathered near the deputy commissioner’s office in Guwahati to protest against the government for not regularising their jobs.

While speaking to Inside Northeast, one of the protesting teachers said: "We have only one demand. We demand unconditional regularization of our jobs. All 41,000 of us have to be given unconditional regulaization."

Another protester implored the Education Minister and the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, to make provisions for the regularization of their jobs and threatened to continue the agitation until their demands are met.
