Guwahati, November 18, 2019:

Assam’s Gamosa, a scarf is symbolic of the rich culture and diversity of Assam, has gotten the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This is a significant development as the GI tag is used on certain products, which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin.

The GI tag identifies agricultural, natural or manufactured goods with special features unique to the said area.

The 124th Geographical Indications Journal has featured Gamosa with the GI tag. It said, “The gamosa is a traditional textile and a symbol of Assamese culture.”

It may be mentioned here that the application for Gamosa was made by the Handicraft Development in the Golaghat distict in Assam.

Along with Gamosa, Chokuwa rice of Assam has also received the GI tag. The rice is said to be used in social and religious ceremonies.

The GI tags for both the Assam products will help boost the market for the two. It may be mentioned here, that the GI tag ensures that only the authorized users get to use the product name.
