Hailakandi, April 28, 2020:
ATM burglar Altaf Hussain Laskar alias Reshim who recently escaped the police was re-arrested in the wee hours of Tuesday in Hailakandi district of Assam.
Pabindra Kumar Nath, the Superintendent of Police, disclosed that the ATM mastermind was arrested again from an area falling under the Hailakandi Sadar Police Station following consistent "search efforts."
Laskar, who was on police remand, escaped from the police net while he was undergoing treatment at the SK Roy Civil Hospital on the night of March 23, leading to the suspension of an inspector.
A team of Hailakandi district police led by Deputy Superintendent of Police on deputation to 21 AP(IR) Bn., Faiz Ahmed Barbhuiya conducted a raid with the help of Cachar district police at Loknathpur Part I and apprehended the "mastermind" hiding inside an earthen bunker on March 19. The police found Rs.6 lakh in cash, two mobile handsets, ammunition of 5.56 bore rifle, sharp weapons and jewellery items in his possession.
A case no. 268/20 under Section 224 IPC has been registered against him at the Hailakandi Sadar Police Station. The district police has so far arrested nine persons and registered case nos.228/20, 229/20 and 230/20 under Sections 457 and 380 IPC at Hailakandi Sadar Police Station against them for looting SBI ATMs in Hailakandi.
In recent times, around Rs 85 lakh has been looted from three ATMs in Hailakandi district.
