GUWAHATI: The Election Commission of India has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam police to launch an investigation into those who allegedly created and uploaded a fake doctored video of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal where the leader was heard giving anti-national statements, which went viral.
According to the doctored video, the Mughals ruled India for 800 years, the British for 200, and now the Congress-AIUDF will turn Assam into an Islamic state. This is a hoax video, said Badruddin Ajmal.
RTI activist Saket Gokhale had previously written to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Assam chief secretary, requesting that action be taken against some national media journalists as well as the promoter of a local Assamese news channel for airing the doctored video of AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.
In a letter to the ECI and the Assam chief secretary, RTI activist Saket Gokhale demanded that India TV anchor Archana Singh, DD News consulting editor Ashok Shrivastav, ABP anchor Astha Kaushik, News Nation consulting editor Deepak Chaurasia, and News Live promoter Riniki Bhuyan Sharma be prosecuted.
The AIUDF supremo Badruddin Ajmal has threatened to sue Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), a legal rights organisation affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for uploading a doctored video on its social media pages.
The video, which went viral on social media, was reviewed by a variety of independent fact-checking organisations, including Boom and India Today's Anti-Fake-News War Room.
Later the fact-checkers found the video to be doctored.
