Last year, the state cabinet had approved a proposal to make Bajali, a full-fledged district of Assam.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Assam Cabinet that was held last year in August at the administrative staff college in Khanapara, Guwahati.

At least 10 officials have been appointed in the new district, and a further 85 posts have been created in Bajali to pave way for a new administration, officials informed.

On 27 June 2016, one more district was announced by Sarbananda Sonowal, taking the total number from 32 to 33 which was Majuli (carved out of the Northern parts of Jorhat).
