A Bangladeshi national has been apprehended in Assam's Guwahati city just ahead of the publication of the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is to be published on July 31.
A Bangladeshi youth has been nabbed in Hatigaon area of Guwahati city. As per sources, he had travelled hundreds of kilometres and come to Assam in search of better employment opportunities.
The youth has been identified as Suman Mitra. He had confessed that he originally hails from Sulamganja in Bangladesh.
The youth 'fessed up in front of cameras that he had crossed the Indo-Bangladesh borders and arrived in Guwahati with the help of brokers. He has also confessed that along with him, three other youths had also come to Guwahati.
Local authorities nabbed the youth with inputs from the locals living in the area. The authorities have launched an investigation into the matter.
It may be mentioned that the The National Register of Citizens is a register containing names of all genuine Indian citizens residing in India.
The register was first prepared and its updation process was put into action after the 1951 Census of India.
