The Unconditional Citizenship Demand Forum (UCDF) of Silchar on Wednesday expressed resentment over alleged harassment of people whose nationality is suspect.
The UCDF celebrated the 72nd Independence Day but said there were various issues which needed to be addressed.
“People lodged in the detention centres are being harassed. There are many genuine Indian citizens whose names were not included in draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) and they are now facing harassment,” activist Krishanu Bhattacharjee alleged.
He continued: “A 102-year-old man, Chandradhar Das, is facing harassment on the suspicion that he is an illegal immigrant. As no government lawyer has been appointed in his case, the last hearing, which was to be held on Tuesday, has been postponed to September 14. Ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised that the detention camps would be demolished. We want that promise to be fulfilled. We demand that the victims of Partition be freed from the camps,” he insisted.
