Guwahati, January 19, 2019:

Prominent actress from Assam, Barsha Rani Bishaya has warned that the amendment of the Citizenship Act has the potential to turn the Assamese into a 'minority' in their own land, a la Tripura.

While talking to this reporter during an all women rally against the imposition of the CAA, the actress said that the people must keep opposing the CAA as it poses a threat to Assamese culture, which is why it must be defeated at all costs. "Whoever carries Assam in their heart will never shy away from protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act."

Stating that Assam is in "pain" because of the, Barsha said that the future generations will curse the people if Assam turns into the "next Tripura", which has seen the indigenous population turn into a minority, allegedly due to an influx of Bangladeshi migrants from across the border.

Hitting back at the people trolling her on social media due to her participation in the protests against the CAA, Barsha stated that in a democracy, every citizen, including celebs, has a right to express his/her views. She also extended her solidarity to fellow actress and Bollywood superstar, Deepika Padukone, who was recently ridiculed for participating in a protest against the violence at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

It may be mentioned here that the streets of Assam for the last one month echoed once again with the immortal tunes of late Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s songs, played by the anti-CAA movement. Songs that shriek and reveal the spirit of the land, its people and their struggles.

In Upper Assam, the songs of Bhupen daa and the spirit of rebellion is especially strong, as the activists and student bodies have been campaigning non-stop across the region to pressurize the Government to roll back the CAA.
