Bhubaneshwar Kalita an 'Opportunist' for Leaving Congress: Tarun Gogoibhubaneshwar kalita

Guwahati, August 5, 2019:

Three-time former Chief Minister from Assam, Tarun Gogoi, has condemned senior leader Bhubaneshwar Kalita for leaving the party. Kalita, who was a Rajya Sabha member, had announced his decision to quit as MP via Twitter earlier on Monday.

"He is an opportunist", Gogoi told Inside Northeast Editor-in-Chief Afrida Hussain. "Till yesterday, he was criticizing Modi, and today he has done a complete U-turn by leaving the party. Congress has given him everything. Suddenly, he finds something wrong with the Congress. I don't understand what he has found so attractive in the BJP", he added.

Gogoi further said that the leaders who are committed to the Congress ideology will stay with the party, but the opportunists and power-hungry will leave in search of proverbial greener pastures.

The 68-year-old Kalita had begun his term as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Assam on 10 April, 2014, and his term would have expired in 2020.

This will add to the panic in the Congress camp as earlier, Sanjay Singh, another Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, had resigned a few days days, citing a lack of leadership in the grand old party, and had joined the BJP party.

Addressing the media, Sanjay Singh had said: “Congress is still in the past. The country today is with PM Modi and if the country is with him I’m with him. I will join BJP tomorrow.”
