Biswajit Daimary highlights confusion over commissions

Guwahati, December 14, 2018:

Rajya Sabha member Biswajit Daimary raised a pertinent issue in the Parliament  highlighting the hardship being faced by tribals when they move some commissions for redressal of grievances.

Stating that while he supports the formation of any commission, he categorically stated that it should serve the purpose for which it was formed.

“We have the ST Commission, the Minorities Commission and the National Commission for Backward Class. Their activities are not followed up by the ministry concerned, thus rendering the purpose of their formation useless. The government has to work in sync with the commissions,” Daimary insisted.

Secondly, he said, the issue was about how people who are socially and educationally backward were to be identified.

“Often, there is confusion. Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju is a tribal. So, he can move the ST Commission for being a tribal. Then, as he belongs to the Buddhist community, he can also go to the Minorities Commission. And if a poor tribal, who belongs to a religious minority group, has some issues, where should he go? Should he go to the ST Commission, Minorities Commission or National Commission for Backward Class?” he asked.

After hearing his argument, Speaker Venkaiah Naidu directed the minister concerned to look into the issue.
