GUWAHATI: Biswajit Daimary, newly-inducted member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), today said that the saffron party will contest the upcoming polls in alliance with the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL).
"The two parties already have an understanding as we have forged an alliance in the Council," Daimary stated, adding, "We have now set our eyes on the Assembly polls where we are very likely to resume that same alliance."
"The BJP will float several candidates in the BTR region. Because we have an understanding with the UPPL party, we will also hold discussions with them to ensure that all the Seats are won by the BJP-UPPL combine," Daimary, a former Rajya Sabha MP, said.

The former Working President of the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) also informed that a "joint policy" by the BJP-UPPL is currently in the works as both parties look to cement their supremacy in the BTR post the triumph in the Council polls held last December.

Asked about his possible role in the BJP's strong showing in the Council polls, Biswajit Daimary said, "People in the BTR have been seeking a change. People chose not to vote for the BPF as they had nothing new to offer. The BJP, on the other hand, promised equal rights to all the people. Take the non-Bodos for instance -- they were losing trust in the Council to deliver their needs. The BJP in its campaign said that they would be given their land rights and other rights. This gave a new hope to the people, which is why the saffron party was able to perform beyond expectations."
Speaking on the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act, Daimary said that the "solution" is to provide safeguards to the Assamese people. "Provisions like the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord have to be implemented as most of the complaints against the CAA are specific to Assam. A system has to be worked out wherein the 'CAA' will also be in force, and the people also feel protected," he said.
Asked about criticism of his switch to the BJP, Daimary said, "I have been working since 2001, and have undertaken all the responsibilities given to me by the party. Now, the BJP has entrusted me with some responsibilities, which I am doing. I do not know if my political career is over or not, but I believe that if you are willing to work -- no matter the party -- you are bound to succeed."
