Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi on Monday claimed that the BJP-led government in Assam cheated the tea garden labourers.
He also alleged that there is a nexus between the BJP and some tea garden owners as they have agreed to reduce the bonus of the tea garden labourers to 8.33 per cent instead of 20 per cent.
Speaking to the media, Akhil Gogoi said that as per norms and orders, the tea garden owners were supposed to provide 20 per cent bonus to the labourers but it seemed that with 'support' from the government, the owners have announced the labourers will now be given only 8.33 per cent as a bonus.
He added, "This sudden decision is not just an injustice to the labourers but it also deprives them of their basic pay which the government promised them."
He further said that the government somehow cheated the labourers by not taking action against the tea garden owners. "The BJP government had shown fake affection towards the labourers during the elections by giving them Rs 5000 but this money was just a bait for the labourers as now they have deducted the bonus. The labourers will now get at least Rs 6000 less bonus after the reduction in the bonus", he added.
Gogoi informed that if the labours were in the 20 per cent bonus slab then they would have gotten at least Rs 10000 as bonus but now with 8.33 per cent, they will only get about Rs 4000. It seems the Rs 6000 is actually a deduction for the money they gave to the labourers earlier.
Akhil alleged a nexus between the BJP-RSS and the tea garden owners. He claimed that the BJP has cheated the labourers by not standing with them at present.
