A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader have been arrested by Biswanath police for allegedly physically assaulting daily wage labourers and forcing them to remove their religious skull caps.
The labourers have alleged that BJP leader Tapan Hazarika collected ‘Goonda Tax’ of Rs 50 from daily wage earners and threatened them saying they will be fed pork if they do not pay the tax.
The labourers also alleged that Hazarika harassed a laborer called Abu Hussain at the construction site. Following this, the workers jointly lodged an FIR
The police have arrested Tapan Hazarika and sent him to judicial custody based on the complaint.
