The leader of opposition in Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia has lashed out at the BJP-led coalition government of Assam, for its freakish decision to support the November 3 bandh called by the All Assam Bengali Youth Students’ Federation (AABYSF).
Accusing the state government of maintaining double standard, Saikia told InsideNe over phone, that this same government had strongly opposed the October 23 Assam bandh called by 60 indigenous organizations in protest of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
“On October 23, the state government had ordered its employees to attend office or face the music. The government also threatened to cancel trade license of the traders if they kept their shutters down during the bandh. If the government took such a harsh decision during that bandh, why are they being so soft on this bandh,” asked an aggrieved Saikia.
“Assam government had then said that the Supreme Court has declared any kind of strike or bandh as illegal. Why are they not obeying the apex court’s order now,” asked Saikia.
Saikia has said that the Supreme Court should take suo moto cognizance of it.
