Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday pilloried the BJP for going back on its poll promises.
He alleged that the current government is maintaining a double standard by trying to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and also updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC). If the bill is passed, a large number of people from Bangladesh will be settled in Assam on the basis of religion. Therefore, the updation of NRC will be meaningless, he said.

Gogoi accused the BJP of trying to play divisive politics by trying to pass the bill.
"The BJP, during election campaigns in 2014, had said that all illegal immigrants will be thrown out of Assam. However, after coming to power, they have decided to grant citizenship along with work permit to the illegal immigrants,” he said.
He said as the government had failed to fulfill the promises it made, it was trying to divert the attention of people from the basic issues to other issues such as Ram Mandir and other communal issues.
