New Delhi, January 14, 2019:

"It is clear that the BJP Government does not want to give the press access to information, they are restricting the movement of ideas through the fourth estate", opines senior jounnalist Kalyan Barooah, lamenting the 'media ban' that took place at New Delhi's Assam Bhawan on Monday.

While talking to Inside Northeast, Barooah informs that members of the press had been called to the Assam Bhawan by the representatives of the 'high-powered' committee formed to implement the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, but they were not allowed to enter the premises.

"We had gone to meet the high-powered committee yesterday, when the situation turned somewhat ugly..they had gone to meet the Home Minister at 10 am, and had asked us to meet them in the evening. Later, when we went to the Assam Bhavan, guards prohibited us from entering. We thought best not to argue with the security personnel. At last, Justice Biplab Sharma, Chairman of the committee, came out to meet us outside and gave a byte", says the senior journalist, recalling the incident.

Recalling an earlier incident when former Chief Minister Prafulla Kr. Mahanta too was not allowed to hold a press conference Barooah reveals, "On Sunday, Prafulla Mahanta had organized a press meet at 12 am to address several prevailing issues, but the PRC met him in person and told him that it would be cancelled."

"It is truly baffling, because it was an official committee that we had gone to meet. This is being done from time-to-time. Opposition party people are closely scrutinized. If opposition members give bytes within the premises, the Bhavan members are held answerable", Baruah further complains.
