Guwahati, February 17, 2019:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah has arrived in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, bringing the BJP’s message to a large gathering of followers at a ‘Youth Rally’.

Addressing a gathering in North Lakhimpur, Shah stated that the BJP Government would bring back the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 if the BJP Government is re-instated at the Centre. "Modi Ji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) will bring the Bill again", he assured.

Although the controversy over the contentious Bill is dead, for the moment, as the Government was hesitant to table it at the Rajya Sabha due to the sensitive nature of the Bill and the countless protests that shook the nation due to its unpopularity. It is clear from Shah's statement that the BJP Government is still adamant to pass the Bill, but the proximity to upcoming Lok Sabha elections forced them to withdraw it fearing a severe backlash from the Northeast.

Shah also condemned the February 14 terror attack at Kashmir’s Pulwama in which more than 40 CRPF personnel were martyred. “We are committed to uprooting terror from all corners of the nation, whether it be in India or Assam”, said BJP President Shah. Shah also paid tribute to Assam’s martyred son Maneswar Basumatary and said that his sacrifice would not be in vain.

“BJP gave Bharat Ratna to Gopinath Bordoloi”, Shah said, expressing that the BJP Government is the only Government which has looked after the interests and demands of the state.

He further reiterated the BJP’s promise to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord (1985) if the BJP is victorious in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
