The Congress party have joined the protests against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. Zila Congress and Block Congress have organized a fast today lasting from 10 am-3 pm at state capital Dispur’s Press Club.
Speaking exclusively to InsideNE, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President, Ripun Bora said: “Today, we, the Congress party, have assembled here to participate in a 5-hour fast. It is our third program (against the Bill). We have started these activities from January 21 and will continue till January 31.”
Bora also criticized the ruling BJP for the communal nature of the Bill. “BJP does not have any economic policies. They have only one policy and that is to turn India into a Hindu nation and stay in power by capitalizing on the Hindu people’s sentiments. They do not care about the aspirations of the people but our Constitution is secular in nature and thus, the BJP agenda cannot succeed in India” he added.
Stating the agenda of the party in regards to the Bill, he said: “At the end of the fast, we will send a letter to the President of India demanding that the President’s interference in this matter. We will request that this Assamese jati destroying, Assam destroying, Assam Accord destroying, constitution destroying and secularism destroying Bill be scrapped.”
