Guwahati, October 26, 2019:

Newly-elected Jania MLA Rafiqul Islam of the AIUDFF party has lashed out against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shiladitya Dev over some of his remarks.

"He should be jailed, as many cases have been registered against him. I don't know why he is allowed to roam freely", Rafiqul Islam opined.

Accusing Shiladitya Dev of trying to create a communal divide between Muslims and Hindus, Islam further appealed to the Chief Minister of Assam to put himself behind bars. "Shiladitya himself is a Bangladeshi, he has admitted that himself on camera. His father too is from Bangladesh, he said. A person, who is from Bangladesh himself, has no right to accuse others of being Bangladeshis", he added.

The MLA further stated that the Hojai MLA must apologize to the people of Jania, adding that Shiladitya is making provocative statements so that he can be arrested and earn sympathy ahead of the upcoming elections in Hojai, his Constituency.

Earlier, Shiladitya Dev had alleged that Rafiqul is a 'Bangladeshi' and represents the interests of the illegal Bangaladeshi immigrants in the State of Assam.

It may be mentioned that Shiladitya is known for making provocative statements and has been accused of making 'anti-minority' statements.

Haque, who won the by-polls held on 21 October in the state of Assam, was also previously elected in the Assam Legislative Assembly election in 2011 from the Jania constituency. He was born in Barpeta in Assam in 1973. The AIUDF leader thumped his nearest rival, Congress’ Shomsul Haque, by a hefty margin of 35,037 votes.
