Body of Meghalaya miner recognized as Assam’s Amir Hussain

The recovered body of a trapped miner which was recovered on January 24 from the mine’s main shaft has been identified as that of Amir Hussain, belonging to Assam’s Chirang district. The body was spotted nine days prior by the navy’s underwater remotely operated machine, but due to decomposition, recovery process was difficult.

The body was recognized by the deceased’s wife and mother at district headquarters Khleihriat. The authorities are trying to send his remains to his home so that last rites can be performed. It is to be mentioned that the Meghalaya Government has pledged a sum of rupees 1 lakh as interim relief for families of the trapped miners.

It is to be mentioned that the miners have been trapped at the mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia district since December 13. A second body was also recovered from the mine yesterday. Meanwhile, rescue operations are still on to spot the rest of the miners trapped inside the flooded mine.
