The Bogibeel Bridge in Assam, the foundation stone for which had been laid in 1997 by former Prime Minister HD Devegowda, is set to be opened to traffic today by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Inaugurating the bridge, the Prime Minister will also flag off a train –the Tinsukia-Naharlangan Express. The Assam and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Ministers – Sarbananda Sonowal and Pema Khandu – are also set to attend the ceremony. Many citizens have also arrived to witness the ceremony.
The 4.9 km long bridge, the longest in India, is also India’s first fully-welded bridge. It will reduce the travel time between Delhi and Dibrugarh by three hours. It will also link the Assam districts of Dhemaji and Dibrugarh and will reduce the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The bridge will also make it easier for the government to transport troops and military equipment along the sensitive India-China border in Arunachal.
