Movie Review: ‘Bornodi Bhotiai’ is redefining the Assamese film industry

Guwahati, May 8, 2019:

‘Bornodi Bhotiai’, which has been running successfully in theaters since 3 May, is the tale of the infamous Majuli which is a river island town surrounded by the mighty river Brahmaputra.

The Assamese feature film is the creation of Majuli son Anupam Kaushik Borah, who is overwhelmed at the response to his debut directorial venture.

Every Indian village or small town has a quirk. With an extremely slow pace of life, abundant time and few opportunities for growth, relationships in Majuli tend to be quirky in nature and ‘Bornodi Bhotiyae’ has depicted the same. People are coming to the nearby theatres in rented vehicles to watch the film.

“I guess the people are able to relate the feature film with their lives”, says Anupam Kaushik Borah, the director in response to the warmth that his film has received from audiences.

The story is about a few characters interrelated to each other. There is a girl named ‘Moukon’ (Dorothy Bharadwaj) who loves knitting and embroidery and while doing so, speaks to herself to keep her mind sane. ‘Moukon’ is infamous in the village as a witch or girl with black tongue because of an unfortunate incident for which the people blame her.

There are four friends who are educated but jobless and want to start a goat farm after attending an awareness workshop by the government. One of them is an undiscovered singer, another is theatre actor. All of them are attracted to the same infamous girl in town called Moukon. What’s next? Watch the film to find out.

“Though my journey was brief but as I am associated with the promotional song of ‘Bornodi Bhotiyai’ and I definitely want to say that this film is a masterpiece”, composer Joy Barua told Inside Northeast.

The film is accentuated by its beautiful songs and background music composed by national-award winning singer-composer Tarali Sarma.

“‘Bornodi Bhotiyai’ is a comic feature film, and the director was just narrating the story one day, and without even reading the script I was laughing my heart out. I am so happy that the film is running so well”, Tarali Sharma said.

Performances which seem extremely realistic are the key strength of the film. While the actors in the key characters do an outstanding job, the minor players too have performed very well.

‘Bornodi Bhotiyai’ is a recommended watch.
