GUWAHATI: Atul Bora, the president of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), today announced that it shall contest the ensuing Assembly elections in 26 Constituencies.

Making the announcement in the national capital moments earlier, Bora said, "Our party (AGP) will contest from Chabua, Amguri, Teok, Dergaon, Bokakhat, Kaliabor, Roha, Guwahati West, Chaygaon, Boko, Goalpara East, Goalpara West, Mankachar, Abhayapuri North, Abhayapuri South, Bangaigaon, Barpeta, Bhabanipur, Senga, Sarukhetri, Tezpur, Algapur, Karimganj South, Dalgaon, Naoboisa, and Jamunamukh."

Notably, Bora did not name Barhampur, where AGP stalwart and 2-time chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is the sitting MLA.

In the last elections, the AGP had contested in 27 Constituencies, winning 13 of those.

"This time, they will contest 26 Seats because our president (Ranjeet Dass) will contest from one Seat. As a courtesy, they are leaving that Seat (Patacharkuchi)," said Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam's Finance, Education, and Health Minister and Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor.

Minister Biswa Sarma also informed that another ally -- the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) -- will contest the polls in 8 Constituencies.

"They will make the formal announcement in Guwahati. The alliance has, meanwhile, been sealed," said Sarma.
