GUWAHATI: The Government of Assam has declared November 26 as ‘half-holiday’ as a mark of respect on the day of cremation of the mortal remains of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

All State government offices, semi-government offices, public sector undertakings, corporations, boards, educational institutions etc. will remain closed, an official order of the government read.

It needs mention here that Gogoi's last rites will be performed at the Navagraha crematorium in Guwahati, Assam. Several senior Congress leaders -- including former President Rahul Gandhi -- have arrived in Guwahati to pay their last respects to the statesman.

Gogoi passed away on Monday around 5:40 PM after a prolonged battle against a series of ailments exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. His mortal remains have been taken to the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati's Pankabari area, where residents of Assam flocked in large numbers to pay their tributes to the leader.
